By raising funds, through a variety of events and projects, the Steel Magnolias support the Stramski Children’s Developmental Center. This all volunteer group was founded by Shirley Wild in 1999 with less than 20 charter members. The original intent was to hold a one-time-only fund raising event. So much fun was generated along with $62,000, that it was decided to form a formal organization.
Membership is by invitation only and is limited to 50 active members. There is always a waiting list for membership. Steel Magnolias are proud of the fact that eight of our current or past members are past recipients of the prestigious Rick Racker Women of the Year Award. A great accomplishment for such a small group.
Monthly meetings are held in the beautiful home of the permanent Chairman Anthony Gagliardi. A “La Familia” milieu prevails, in part because of the family-style dinners presented by Chairman Anthony following each meeting. The group has fun together and is known for creativity, which is inspired by Chairman Anthony.
Annually a President-Elect is selected who serves for
two years, the first year as President-Elect and the second year as
President. After the second year the title of President-Emeritus is
bestowed with a perpetual place on the Executive Board. This results in continuity, “ownership of ideas,” and a vast source of experience.
In the past ten years the Steel Magnolias have raised more than a $1,000,000 in support of the Stramski Center. This money has been raised primarily at the annual Gala, where honorees are acknowledged for their contributions to the community. The Home Tour, another Steel Magnolias’ fund raiser, has become one of the groups most popular events and helps to augment the funds raised at the annual Gala.
